I've started a new painting (I know I've mentioned this already) but the difference with this one is that I'm going to be posting my progress on my art site. That way anyone who's interested in the art process can watch a new piece take shape. I think it'll be fun.

In other news, my dad has emailed me recently to ask if he can stay with us when he comes to SA over Christmas. We haven't seen him since Micaela was a babe in diapers (he's never even met Alex) so it will be great. I'm a bit nervous, don't know him very well, but what better way to get re-aquainted than to chat over breakfast, with bleary eyes and tussled hair? Getting down to basics :)

Hi Gaelin,

Thanks for your comment on my blog!

I draw for fun, and not as often as I'd like to :(

I suspect I'd no longer find it fun if I had to do it to earn a living :)

I think...of your fine gallery, I like the one dedicated to David Bohm. It looks really cool. It has been a while since I have read that book...so forgive me if my terminology isn't correct...but in you painting, I can "see" the solution being stirred...and the items disappearing in the solution and reappearing in the same order when stirred in the other direction. I definitely get that impression. Plus the yin-yang, wholeness, metaphor. Good job.

About your current painting: what is the significance of having the round object with many colors placed above your head? And while the world is composed of many colors, why is red the color you choose to stand in?

Hi steve,
The 'round object' is soon going to be a set of horns, which is symbolic of the way I see myself in relation to most people. (not evil, but then the original horned god was not evil, that's a particularly christian psychosis).

The color red is probably the huge amounts of anger/vitality that I feel in relation to being human. The obvious association with blood/death/birth ie. the great cycle of life goes without saying...:)

Thanks for the comments

Oh yes...I see the horns now. It is funny that I didn't see them before, but only the vivid colors.

You made the body paler again..and really outlined the horns. I see no face...but now two openings, beside the main opening that we cannot see in the head...which is not up like it is screaming, but down like it is crying. So, of the two minor ones, is the top one an opening of / in the heart? I have no idea what the lower opening is about, except that it isn't spilling anything right now.

wow, you're not only looking, you're asking! can't think of anything better :)
I think my stance in the painting is one of acceptance. My head is down in resignation. The openings are over the heart (which is bleeding) and over the kundalini chakra point (the base of the spine where the energy flow is strong) When I paint I don't make rational decisions, it's a very emotional process. Only after I have done something do i stand back and figure out what it's about.
If you look closely there are horn-like structures around the body openings. This is a way of linking them to the head area, or the state of mind. The parts of me that are open are the parts which make me different from most people. It is sore and beautiful at the same time.

Indeed, I noticed those small horns that you made on the body...and, for me, then, I could link them to the head area. I like the fact that you cannot see the face, because the face would ruin it...all that I see in front of me is the flesh and its openings..."the meat"...which includes the head, but never the face or the bone (i.e., structure) that the meat hangs from...it is the "meat" that we care about...not some kind of face that we wear.

Anyway, allow me to put my "face" on right now, and tell you that I am sorry if I am going a bit overboard with my critique. I will continue to watch your work's progress with great interest! :+)

you wouldn't belive how welcome your interest is! I meant it when I said that most people don't like my art, 'cos it makes them uncomfortable. So your comments and questions give me hope :)
Stay well (thanks for the mention in your blog)
