spirit path

I started these canvasses by giving them a light black wash, and then leaving them to dry on my study floor. Minutes later my son walked past and inadvertently stood on one. I quite liked the result so I had him stand on the other one too :)
Not what I had in mind when I started out, but I'm pleased anyway...

The mountain range in the background is Table Mountain, which blesses Cape Town in postcards all over the world.
The red and blue paths signify the spirit walk and the earth walk.
I've grown up in Cape Town, and in this painting I'm paying tribute to the Mother City and her role in my spiritual development.

Very cool how your son's footprints factor so prominently in your statement of place and development, your here-being. His footprints are part of your path, and it happened on its own, without your pushing it to happen.

It's a truly beautiful thing. What lessons can we take from this, and apply to our daily sitting practice?

That's such a good point, the fact that he stood on the canvas 'by mistake' can almost relate to the fact that I fell pregnant 'by mistake' and yet having kids has worked out so beautifully. They really are both part of my spiritual practice, and that's something I haven't much considered...

When it comes to zazen, one lesson would be that there are no mistakes, everything just is, it's us who attach the value judgements.

Thanks jerry :)

I think it's a great tribute...

I like how both paths begin and end together.

How come, at certain spots on each path, they split in two?

Hmmm... I think the split path represents the organic nature of my progress. Western logical mind creates 'either/or' scenarios when faced with decision making, whereas in reality it is 'this AND this And this' ...etc

Nice question, I hadn't considered that aspect of the image. Isn't the net great? Meeting people who allow me to see deeper into myself is such a blessing.

How funny you should say that...
because I once compared my "spirit" with my "soul" and used those words....

But in my case:

Spirit - "either / or"
Soul - "...AND..."

That is so cool!

Hi Gaelin

Thanks for visiting Cuckoo's call! I'm eagerly awaiting your next picture.

I think you described my writing style very precisely, and that also sums up my nature!

Your's style / nature - give me some time and I hope I will also come up with a precise description!
